This French grip double bass bow is a rare and refined example of the craftsmanship of Johann Stüber—a master luthier and archetier whose journey through Europe helped shape the Dutch tradition of violin and bow making in the early 20th century.

Born in 1888 in Markneukirchen, a town steeped in centuries of violin-making heritage, Stüber trained under Otto Braun and worked with renowned makers such as Eugen Gärtner in Stuttgart and Max Möller in Amsterdam. His move to the Netherlands in 1914 marked a turning point: under the mentorship of Karel van der Meer, Stüber became part of a new wave of talented makers who revitalized Dutch lutherie.

After brief collaborations with Gärtner, Möller, and Josef Vedral, Stüber settled in The Hague in 1922, establishing himself as an independent maker and co-founding the Dutch Group of Violin and Bow Makers. His instruments—often inspired by Guarneri and Stradivari—were known for their rich tonal qualities and distinctive orange-red or red-brown varnish. His violins earned accolades in Brussels and The Hague, cementing his reputation as one of the region’s finest artisans.
