Likely of Hungarian origin, this instrument arrived in Australia from England over 20 years ago. It is a larger instrument, with deep ribs and elongated corners reminiscent of a Panormo-style bass. Despite its dimensions, it boasts a surprisingly compact string length of approximately 40"!
 
Having undergone restoration within the Atelier, the instrument's brass-plated scroll has been refitted with custom machine heads, alongside further adjustments to enhance its overall playability.
 
The current setup lends itself particularly well to jazz players seeking a richer, fatter sound (think Ray Brown, Richard Davis, Paul Chambers, etc.), although a lower-tension setup could prove equally favourable. The shorter string length makes navigating the fingerboard and ascending into thumb position feel remarkably nimble, especially for an instrument of this size.
 
Orchestrally, this instrument has an enormous amount to offer, with the capacity to beef out a section, blend as needed, cut through when required, and, perhaps most importantly, shake the floorboards where necessary.
The scroll also makes this instrument an ideal candidate for a C-extension, offering further versatility in an orchestral setting. With its commanding presence, substantial tonal depth, and surprisingly approachable playing dimensions, this bass would make a fantastic lifelong companion for a professional or advanced student seeking something with serious subs.
