Rare opportunity!
From a private collection in New Zealand for more than half a century, this beautiful Hawkes and Son Double Bass is available in our showroom here at Atelier Puglisi.
The instrument has been returned to its former glory and brought up to modern standards in our workshop for over 12 months, carefully detailing and varnishing the entire instrument.
Incredibly this instrument has almost no cracks, just from one very minor crack in the lower rib which was repaired at the time of construction. It is almost unheard of to find an instrument from the early 20th century with no belly or back braces and a completely intact neck.
Benedict was very privileged to have been the first person to open this instrument since it was first built and see the original high quality workmanship. The original bass bar, endpin, tailpiece and machine heads remain. A new fingerboard and a reset to the overstayed at the belly was done to accommodate modern playing. The bass even had the original sound post, but for tonal reasons this was changed.
