Stamped - H.R. PFRETZSCHNER
This bow bears the distinguished stamp of Hermann Richard Pfretzschner (1857–1921), one of the most influential figures in bow making. His designs were rooted in the principles of renowned 19th-century Archetiers—Vuillaume, Voirin, and Tourte—combining tradition with exceptional craftsmanship.
After studying under his father, Carl Richard, and later the esteemed French luthier Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume in Paris, Pfretzschner established his bow-making workshop in Markneukirchen in 1880. His reputation flourished, earning him prestigious commissions, including an appointment from the King of Saxony and the honor of supplying bows to the Royal Court in Dresden, the symphony orchestra, and the Conservatorium.
Pfretzschner’s bows are celebrated for their exquisite balance, full elasticity, and masterful workmanship. His sticks, though substantially wooded, maintain a remarkable litheness, free from unnecessary ornamentation or excess gloss. The H.R. Pfretzschner stamp is a testament to his legacy, delivering effortless maneuverability and refined playability—hallmarks of this master craftsman’s school of bow making.
