Brambach, Bohemia – West Germany, circa 1960s

Crafted in the renowned bow-making region of Brambach, this bow bears the stamp of Gustav Fischer, a skilled archetier whose work reflects the enduring traditions of German craftsmanship. Active during the mid-20th century, Fischer trained under the legendary August Rau (1866–1951), one of Markneukirchen’s most influential bow makers.

Rau’s legacy is deeply woven into the fabric of German bow making. Born in Siebenbrünn, near Markneukirchen, Rau apprenticed with the esteemed Nürnberger family and later honed his skills in Dresden under Wilhelm Knopf and A.R. Weichold. His return to Markneukirchen marked the beginning of a prolific career defined by precision, elegance, and innovation. Rau’s workshop became a cradle for future masters, mentoring figures such as Hermann Wilhelm Prell, Adolf Curt Schuster, and Gustav Fischer himself.
