RARE FIND!
Made in France 1949 by the family of Collin Mezin, this instrument has been kept in a brilliant immaculate condition. A remarkable piece of history, which we are genuinely thrilled to be offering.
Violins and cellos from this firm have periodically passed through our workshop but this is the first time we have ever had the privilege of providing a double bass. Complete with its original certificate #3 no less. 
 
This  instrument retains its originality in several meaningful places, including the rosewood fingerboard and nut, (subtly extended to suit modern soloistic playing), and with the original workshop intact machine heads.  The scroll features a hollowed pegbox, with dramatically sloped narrow shoulders, and a flat back in brilliant condition.
I would describe this bass as a soloist’s dream - ready to meet Bottesini or Koussevitzky with confidence and audacity! 
In thumb position, it offers a bright, singing quality with a depth that remains unmistakably “bass,” yet with a lyrical sonority reminiscent of Collin‑Mezin cellos. In the words of our showroom manager, “it is an instrument that, in the right hands, rewards curiosity and invites expression.”
 
Collin‑Mezin instruments have long been celebrated for their exceptional craftsmanship, distinctive tonal palette, and deep historical lineage. The family’s tradition traces back to Charles Jean Baptiste Collin‑Mezin, born in 1841, who refined his artistry under his father’s guidance and drew inspiration from the great Italian masters. Their work is known for meticulous attention to detail, the choice of high‑quality tonewood, and precise workmanship.
